LCWA focuses on THC driving laws

WA’s major focus right now is still THC driving laws and the work of the Medicinal Cannabis and Safe Driving Working Group. Dr Brian Walker recently questioned the Health Minister directly in Parliament, referencing new peer-reviewed research published in Clinical Toxicology which shows that pupil dilation alone is not a reliable indicator of cannabis impairment. As a result of this questioning, the Minister has confirmed that the research will now be circulated to the Working Group for consideration.

Importantly, the Government has also formally confirmed that the Working Group remains on track to deliver its recommendations to the Minister for Health before the end of this calendar year. Brian is continuing to apply steady pressure to ensure this process delivers real reform, with expectations that meaningful developments will emerge in early 2026.

Beyond driving reform, Brian has also been active on national climate risk and industrial hemp policy. Through questions to the Minister for Agriculture, he has highlighted the need for Western Australia to stay aligned with interstate developments on hemp regulation, particularly following recent moves in Victoria. The Government confirmed that WA is participating in the national industrial hemp regulators network, but that any local legislative review will be considered alongside broader government priorities.

Brian has also pursued transparency around police dismissals and misconduct, specifically seeking clarity on whether cannabis-related charges have played any role in recent terminations. While full figures are still pending due to manual data interrogation delays, this scrutiny remains ongoing.

Outside the chamber, the LCWA Party also took part in Western Australia’s Pride celebrations for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the movement. The team received a warm and enthusiastic response from the crowd, with Captain Cannabis making a rare public appearance.
