Latest wastewater results give Aussies bronze medal for cannabis use

Australia ranks third for cannabis consumption amongst developed nations, according to the latest drug wastewater report out today.

On any one day, 14 per cent of Aussies have consumed the drug, compared to the Dutch (21 per cent) and second-place Spain (15 per cent).

Although the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission data shows a slight dip in cannabis use, it is by far the most consumed illicit drug in Australia.

The news comes as submissions continue to flood in to the first ever NSW Parliamentary inquiry into cannabis legalisation, with final submissions due to be lodged by the end of this month.

Legalise Cannabis MP Jeremy Buckingham said more than 300 submissions were already available to be viewed publicly, and the response to legalisation was overwhelmingly positive.

“We already know that half of all Australians are in favour of legalising cannabis for personal use, and that support both rising year by year, and is consistent across states and age groups,” Mr Buckingham said.

“I would urge everybody to make their views known – there is still time – simply by searching ‘NSW cannabis inquiry’.

“It’s time we took this industry out of the hands of criminals and regulate it properly rather than pursuing the failed criminal justice model, which does nothing more than waste police resources and criminalise working people and indigenous communities.”
