A New Era for Australian Farmers
We saw a major step forward for Australian agriculture in NSW — and a glimpse of what a smart, modern cannabis policy can deliver when government finally lets the shackles off.
As reported by the ABC, a new national hemp trial has kicked off, opening the door for farmers to grow a wider range of hemp varieties across Australia. For the first time, growers will be able to cultivate crops with slightly higher THC limits— still nowhere near anything psychoactive, but finally aligned with international standards. This is a small but important shift that gives our farmers access to the same industrial hemp genetics used successfully overseas.
Why does this matter? Because Australia has been stuck with one of the most conservative hemp frameworks in the world. Outdated THC caps have strangled innovation, closed the door on new seed varieties, and left our farmers competing with one hand tied behind their backs. This trial is a chance to fix that — and to position NSW as a leader in a booming global industry built on sustainable fibre, food, building materials and bio-composites.
For years, the Legalise Cannabis Party has pushed for exactly this: a science-based, modernised hemp regulatory system that treats hemp like the agricultural crop it is — not like a threat to society. Our office has been working closely with industry leaders and farmers who just want the freedom to grow high-quality, compliant crops without navigating an obstacle course of red tape.
This trial is a start. But just to be clear: it must lead to permanent reform. NSW has the land, the climate and the expertise. What we need now is the political will to unleash a new green manufacturing era — where hemp isn’t a niche curiosity but a mainstream crop delivering jobs from the paddock to the factory floor. As Jeremy said recently in Parliament:
“Hemp is not the enemy. Prohibition is. If we want a sustainable future, it’s time to back our farmers, modernise the law and grow an industry that will outlast us all.”
The Legalise Cannabis Party will continue to champion the farmers, innovators and regional communities ready to take this industry to the next level in NSW and across Australia.
