Cannabis and Muscle Spasms

Medical cannabis is increasingly recognised for its potential to alleviate muscle spasms, with evidence primarily emerging from multiple sclerosis (MS) research. Muscle spasms, or involuntary hypertonicity, can be caused by a variety of factors, from insufficient stretching before physical activity to underlying conditions like spinal cord injuries or degenerative diseases. Traditional treatments often involve pharmaceutical regimes, which can have side effects such as drowsiness, nausea, and depression. On the other hand, cannabinoids like THC have been shown to bind with receptors in the human endocannabinoid system, reducing levels of inflammatory proteins and suppressing the spasm response. Furthermore, there is growing anecdotal evidence supporting it's role in muscle recovery and pain management, leading to its increasing acceptance in the athletic community.
