A New Hemp Industry Development Plan

One only has to look to our colonial past to see how great hemp is as a crop. As most of you know, Australia was practically founded on this magnificent plant. The British initially envisioned Australia as a commercial colony for hemp production, with hemp fibre critical for rope, sails and other naval supplies.

That all changed during the late 1930s when governments around the world began conflating industrial hemp with its psychoactive cousin. Cannabis prohibition effectively shut down an industry that had existed since the First Fleet.

Which makes it a little ironic that for years we've been told hemp is a crop of the future.

Industrial hemp can be used in textiles, building materials, composites, food products, cosmetics and thousands of other applications. It captures carbon, improves soil health and creates opportunities for regional communities. Globally, hemp is used in more than 25,000 products and the Australian industry is forecast to be worth $100 million by 2032.

So if the potential is so obvious, what has been holding it back?

The answer is a mix of complex regulations, inconsistent licensing systems, limited processing infrastructure and a lack of coordinated government support. Farmers and businesses have been ready, but the framework needed to support industry growth has been missing.

That's why the NSW Government's new Hemp Industry Development Plan is such an important step forward.

The plan aims to improve licensing, review legislation, attract private investment, strengthen research partnerships, expand processing facilities and create a more consistent regulatory framework across the sector.

This progress did not happen by accident.

For years, Jeremy Buckingham and the Legalise Cannabis Party have pushed for hemp to be taken seriously as an agricultural, environmental and economic opportunity. Through constructive engagement with government and industry, we have helped drive the conversation from possibility to action.

As Jeremy Buckingham said:

"This is a major breakthrough in the development of what will become a significant industry in NSW. The Legalise Cannabis Party has worked constructively with the NSW Government to initiate the Industrial Hemp Task Force and the Industrial Hemp Development Plan, which creates the framework for the delivery of real results."

For the first time in many years, NSW has a clear roadmap for developing a hemp industry that can benefit farmers, manufacturers, regional communities and the environment. The opportunity has always been there. Now the framework to unlock it is finally taking shape.
